This is a short story about how to manage your e-commerce logistics successfully in a globalized world and refers to how Prime Penguin today is used by successful e-shops.

Let’s say we where a sneaker brand

What would it be like if we were a desirable and affordable urban sneaker brand with growing demand worldwide, instead of a digital e-commerce logistics solution? And even more interesting and relevant: How would we solve our logistics?

Ok, let’s hypothetically say that we where this cool sneaker brand, based in Stockholm with clients spread all over the world with a focus on London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Stockholm, Oslo, and Melbourne.

So far so good. We have a success and a demand for some of the major urban fashion cities worldwide – that’s great!

The problem though is the high cost of sending all orders directly from our office warehouse in Stockholm. It worked in the beginning when the global deliveries just where a few, but the demand has recently been increasing a lot and the demand is now more international.

Prime Penguin as the solution

This is where Prime Penguin comes into the picture. Not as a potential sneaker brand this time, but of course as the logistics solution it is.

We easily find suitable logistics partners near London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Stockholm, Oslo, and Melbourne by procuring our total logistics need online at:

www.primepenguin.com/procurement

In a short while, we will receive price offers from suitable and pre-connected 3PL-partners and we are ready to choose what providers to get started and sign with.

We aim high and decide to get started with 3PL-providers in California, London, Sydney, Oslo and Frankfurt simultaneously and start to send and redirect selected sneakers from our Chinese located production straight to the selected 3PL-warehouses at the actual markets.

Meanwhile, we experience the Prime Penguin platform in demo mode and connect the e-shop, which is based on Magento and Shopify. The integration only takes a few minutes and we shortly get a full overview of all order data.

A few days later the contracts from our new 3PL partners appear in the platform and we also start to see incoming goods arriving at the warehouses, managed into shelves, pallets, etc from the cloud-based interface and a selected key person from each 3PL helps us out with all preparations.

Some final adjustments are being made (order mapping, routing, etc.) and we are soon ready to get started to let our new partners handle client orders at the actual markets.

Why Prime Penguin?

You have just read a short and simplified story about how to find suitable 3PL-partners in order to outsource all your e-commerce logistics and thrive on a global market, together with Prime Penguin.

Prime Penguin is a modern solution for domestic and international e-commerce logistics outsourcing.

Prime Penguin helps you to establish satellite warehouses, near where your clients are located which helps you to optimize the delivery time, costs and environmental footprint for all your client orders.

The number of e-commerce client returns is rising and the return rate is today around 30%, depending on product segment and market. A rising return rate is of course no good news for an e-shop, where the cost of freight, returns handling and environmental impact are the most obvious.

This is true, while certain studies show that many returns are being transported hundreds of miles in order to reach back to the e-shop warehouse (internal or external).

Can this be optimized?

Yes, it can. Prime Penguin has a solution, used by many e-shops, which among many other things, optimize returns and it’s environmental and economic impacts.

Prime Penguin´s smart platform simply connects e-shops with the best 3PL-companies, to handle all their orders and returns. The platform also gives a total digital overview of all warehouses and all its activities and helps the e-shop to optimize a low cost and Co2 impact.

The geographically dispersed logistics network of Prime Penguin and the plug and play technology enables e-shops to establish several warehouses (managing returns), near where the clients are located. This gives the e-shop the advantage to shorten the returns distance and enable environmentally-friendly (last-mile) deliveries to (and from) the most optimal warehouses. This, if done right, is both good for the cost of the returns but also and more important – for the environment.

Black Friday is expected to bring its all-time high sales peak this year. How prepared are you?

It will get crazy and definitely boost your sales – fantastic, right? But there are also risks involved.

The most obvious risk with the Black Friday and such “phenomena” is the compression of sales to a few single dates. Most of your infrastructure will handle this very well and not least your digital infrastructure, including your sites and e-commerce platform.

The bottleneck will though probably be the physical order handling at your warehouses. It’s nothing strange about it and it really makes sense. Logistics are operational, demands staffing and warehousing resources, which are hard to suddenly scale on, without slacking on quality.

Prepare for Black Friday

There is a key to success though and it involves planning. Prime Penguin have the capacity of helping your business during stressful times and sales peaks such as Black Friday. Our pre-connected partner network of logistics provider are experts in handling your orders and are ready to help both in a short as well as long term perspective.

Our smart plug and play solution makes it easier than ever for your e-commerce to outsource your warehousing and order handling, aslo with environmental gains in less co2, if done right.

Please contact us for any questions regarding your Black Friday. Our logistics and supply chain expert Johan, is very happy to discuss Black Friday operations with you today.

Time to outsource your e-commerce logistics?

Why some e-shops prefer to keep their logistics in-house and why we think they can change their mind.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="324" img_size="full"][vc_column_text]First of all, we are not fully independent on the matter. Prime Penguin is made for logistics outsourcing and our vision and goal is to make it as easy and as naturally as possible for e-shops to outsource their logistics. But, on the other side, we also talk to many e-shops about the topic and therefore hear a lot of arguments for why they sometimes prefer an in-house solution, which is interesting. In this short article, we will present those “arguments” and share our thought about why they are worth a second thought.

Typical arguments for in-house logistics (as heard from the e-shops themselves):
“We are three hardworking founders of this e-shop, who all put more than 12 hours per day into the business, so there is time for us to handle the logistics in-house, also at a free cost.” “We believe in the quality of service, provided by 3PL companies, but we can’t really buy into the price tag of its services, which is higher than the hourly paid salary to our employees.” “Efficient and well-working logistics is super important for our overall success and should, therefore, be considered as one of our core operations. Therefore, we need full control which we probably would lose if we outsource it.”
Our view
Okay, let’s start with the fact that there obviously is a cost involved for external logistics. That is of course perfectly true and this total amount should honestly be compared with the total cost of an in-house solution. What is important though, is to be totally honest to yourself and involve all costs in this comparison. One concrete example is that you (as a business owner) should set a relevant price on your own time which you are putting into the logistics handling, as you actually work for your company. This price should be in line with your salary, or set to the same price as if it was done by an hourly paid employee or consultant. Regarding the price tag: There is a very positive factor involved in the 3PL pricing which simply expressed is that “you pay for what you get”. Mainly not in the sense that you pay more for a high-end solution but more that you only pay for work that actually has been done. The reversed example can be found in an in-house logistics set up with a cost of employees, even if there are no logistics operations ATM. The fear of losing control of physical orders and warehousing activities is of course also understandable. This is a classic outsourcing dilemma, where you basically have the feeling of losing control when not handling operations in-house. This is fully understandable and it is also one of the big reasons why we developed the Prime Penguin cloud-based platform, for a total overview of your outsourced e-commerce logistics. E-commerce growth and change

E-commerce sales world wide is expected to more than double it’s size in four years time. This eminent growth will off course serve the industry well. But, as always in times of rapid growth and change, some will thrive more than others.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="327" img_size="full"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The rapid growth of e-commerce will lead to tougher times for traditional, physical stores, which is expected to lose ground they say. But – how about the competition within the specific growing industry of e-commerce then? This topic is much less discussed and is therefore interesting to think about.

Growth will serve the industry well
The expected growth will, of course, serve the e-commerce industry very good as a whole. Many new e-shops will appear, do well and some of them will do it really well. Naturally, many established e-shops also will thrive under those circumstances.
Who will succeed best?
Some e-shops will for sure gain a lot more from this opportunity than others. So, which will be the biggest winners during these hay days and why? Here we will very shortly try to explain how we see it: Times of expansion will naturally probably also lead to a lot of change. A booming industry will, like a magnet, attract not only capital but also new ideas, habits and new ways of solving things. Methods are (and will) constantly be changing. Maybe also in an accelerating pace. Take a look at today’s many different methods of end-client delivery for example, which has increased sharply only in a short period of time. Some of the most frequently used and efficient methods today did not exist five years ago. Furthermore, some of today’s established marketing and payment tools barley existed not too long ago eighter. This quickly brings us to the point of what we think that e-shop owners should be aware of and keep an eye on, in order to gain the most of a growing industry. Namely: technology and innovation. There is no need to be first, but it is important to always be innovative and technically competitive at the right time. More exactly, that right time is when your clients start to demand such services and that can sometimes happen more or less over a night. So, one big key to success would probably be to have the technical knowledge, follow its trends and be ready when the right time comes.
